Hudson River Valley Art Workshop with Kim English

On August 4, I drove to Greenville, NY for a week long oil painting adventure in the Catskill Mountain  region of New York.  The workshop was conducted by artist Kim English.  Kim's paintings are light filled and often figurative. He paints ala prima, all in one session, catching the immediacy and freshness of the subject. We had live models four of the five days with sessions both inside and outside the studio.  One day was spent at a local farm which had a wide variety of subject matter including cows, chickens, and great treasure filled barns.

The workshop is housed in a glorious bed and breakfast and adjacent carriage house and cottages. My room in the carriage house was above the studio and had a shower, sink, and refrigerator. Excellent chef prepared meals were provided in the dining room of the bed and breakfast.  Meal times were also a treat because our lively class members shared painting stories and forged friendships.

I truly can not say enough good things about my week at the Hudson Valley Art Workshop.   From the hand made chocolate to the friendly service and staff, I was treated like royalty.  To paint with this fine group of artists and learn from Kim English was life changing.

My favorite part of IceFest is ArtFest which happens on Saturday of festival weekend in the old warehouse behind the Public Opinion Office building.  Artists fill the space and paint and create all morning long.  In the afternoon the art they have created is auctioned off for charity.

These are pictures from last year to give you a feel for this amazing experience.  I have done it for about 5 years and I love the exhilaration of being around so many creative, wonderful artists.  This year 35 artists will take part.  Please come by to see us work and to take part in the art auction later in the day.

Food is available for sale and live musical entertainment.  The artists will be creating and you can ask them questions and watch them work.  This is a great family event that may inspire your budding artist.

Most of the artists are painters, but you will also see some block printing, glass art, and multi-media creations.

The warehouse is unheated-----------

so bundle up!!!!

Hope to see you at ArtFest
on Saturday, February 3!!!!

Berkley Springs Visit Today

Today my good friend and fellow artist, Linda Moseman went with me to the charming town of Berkley Springs, WV.  Our main goal was to find out about how to submit art for sale at the "Ice House" which is a co-op gallery run by the Morgan County Arts Council.  We had a grand time walking around the town and stopped into several shops before arriving at the Ice House.  We learned that artists within a 50 mile radius of Berkley Springs may submit samples of their work to be juried.  If you meet the jury standards, you are accepted as a member of the Co-op.  You pay a $30 monthly fee and a 20% commission plus a little more for credit card purchases.  There are gallery work days also and you bring in fresh stock every 3 months.  Linda and I feel like we need to try this.

I took some pictures inside some shops.  We both fell in love with the hand painted silk scarves in the Mountain Laurel Gallery.  There was so much to see and do that we both want to go back and spend more time in this great little town that is full of fantastic art and art opportunities.

July 1, 2010--- We Arrived!!

We arrived on Schoodic Peninsula today about 4:00. We left McConnellsburg at 12:30 a.m. this morning. Kate showed us our living accommodations and gave us a tour of the facility. We quickly unpacked the car. While the light was still good we hiked the lovely Sundew Trail and I shot this photo of my brother, Bob. I will have studio space in Dorr Hall. Tomorrow morning I am taking all of my materials to the studio. We took a few photos of a cranky porcupine and later saw him high up in a white birch tree. Kate showed us the Moore auditorium where some of the work of previous artists is housed. It is a very nice display space and the work was high quality. What piece will I add to the collection? What things will I make during this amazing month? Tomorrow we will meet Kate on MDI to see where my public program will take place. I am very tired tonight, but so excited and happy. Thanks to everyone who has said prayers for us and our adventurous journey.---- Dee
